A llms.txt file (usually at yoursite.com/llms.txt) is a concise, markdown-formatted summary of your website: what the business does, key pages, contact facts. It's a community proposal, not a web standard — but several AI crawlers are known to look for it, so it's cheap insurance.
What it does
It gives AI readers a clean, canonical summary instead of forcing them to assemble one from your navigation. It's especially useful for sites where key facts are buried in images, PDFs or JavaScript.
What it doesn't do
It doesn't guarantee citations, rankings or recommendations. It doesn't fix a site AI can't otherwise read. Think of it as a business card handed to the robot — helpful, not decisive.
Does your small business need one?
If AI assistants matter to your customers: yes, publish one — it takes about an hour. But do it after the fundamentals: plain-text identity, services, pricing, structured data, crawler access. A llms.txt on an otherwise unreadable site is decoration.
